Can you imagine a park changing hands, not once, but potentially twice? Langley Fork Park, nestled in McLean, Virginia, has a fascinating history of ownership and community involvement. This 52-acre park, located at the corner of Georgetown Pike and Colonial Farm Road, is currently managed by Fairfax County Park Authority through an agreement with the National Park Service. It boasts two diamond fields, two rectangle fields, basketball courts, fitness trails, and wooded areas. But this seemingly tranquil park has been at the center of discussions and planning since 2011. The Fairfax County Park Authority has been working with the community to revise Langley Fork Park’s master plan. The original plan, from 1980, no longer reflects the needs of the growing McLean area. The increasing demand for athletic fields spurred the need for an updated vision. In 2013, a draft master plan was presented to the community, incorporating feedback received by mail, email, and phone. But the story doesn’t end there. A proposed land exchange could shift Langley Fork Park from federal ownership to the Fairfax County Park Authority. In return, the Park Authority would offer a portion of nearby Langley Oaks Park. This exchange adds another layer of complexity to Langley Fork Park’s future. The National Park Service hosted an open house in 2018 to gather community input on this potential exchange. Following the meeting, the NPS decided to proceed with the land exchange. However, there was a condition. The Fairfax County Park Authority needed to amend the Langley Fork Master Plan to meet the NPS’s specifications. This intricate process involves presenting the revised plan to the Park Authority Board, preparing deeds, and ensuring all legal requirements are met. If the exchange is approved, the Park Authority plans to improve Langley Fork Park’s facilities. Meanwhile, the NPS would maintain Langley Oaks Park as a natural area. The land exchange, if completed, signifies a change in the use of federally owned property. This necessitates an evaluation according to the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. The evaluation will include an assessment of impacts from the potential developments outlined in the revised master plan. So, as you stand here, at the edge of Langley Fork Park, remember that this seemingly ordinary park is a testament to the ongoing evolution of community spaces. Its future, intertwined with both local needs and federal regulations, continues to be written.
