Imagine a place where the wind whispers tales of Venice’s past, a place where the only sound is the lapping of the lagoon’s waters against the shore. This is Sacca San Biagio, a small island just off the Giudecca. A place of quiet solitude, Sacca San Biagio is a man-made island born from debris, the discarded refuse of a city. Some might say that the island was created out of nothing, but the truth is far more intriguing.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Venice was in a state of upheaval. The city’s growth was explosive. New canals were dug, old buildings were demolished, and waste piled high. To solve this crisis, the city turned to its watery expanse, the Venetian Lagoon. The Lagoon became a giant dumping ground. From this very refuse, Sacca San Biagio was born. So, the island’s origins, while humble, echo the constant dynamism of Venice itself.

But San Biagio has a past that extends beyond its foundation in rubble. The island was a place of contradictions, a place of both hope and despair. It once housed an incinerator, a symbol of industry and progress, but also of the city’s struggle to survive. Here, the city burned its unwanted waste, a stark reminder of the constant battle between progress and the environment. But since the incinerator was shut down in the mid-1980s, the island has had a chance to heal its wounds, to rediscover its natural beauty. Today, the island’s future is uncertain, its fate yet to be decided after plans for a theme park and cultural center have been put on hold.

Sacca San Biagio may be an island of humble origins. But it is an island that speaks of the city’s ingenuity, its resilience, and its ability to find beauty even in the most unexpected places.
