Tucked away in the rolling hills of Tennessee, Oakland Baptist Church has witnessed nearly a century and a half of community life. Oakland Baptist Church first opened its doors in 1889. It wasn’t built by contractors, but by the very hands of the community it would serve. Men donated trees from their own land. They sawed the lumber, and one man, W.H. Roe, even hand-made the boards for the roof. Oakland Baptist Church became a testament to their faith and hard work. The church’s story began a year earlier, in 1888, when the small community recognized the need for a spiritual home. On December 30th, they gathered to discuss their dream. Among them were two ministers, S.M. Gupton and G.W. Trenary, and deacons from Ebenezer Church, Cove Burch and John T. Hinkle. A crucial figure in the church’s founding was Sylvanous Dorris, who would later become one of Oakland’s pastors. It was on a cold January day in 1889 when Aunt Sally Dorris Roe, driven by her devotion to her community and faith, donated the land. The land wasn’t just for the church building. It also provided space for a school and a cemetery, foreshadowing the central role Oakland Baptist Church would play in the community’s life cycle. The first service at Oakland Baptist Church saw twelve members transferring from Bethlehem Baptist Church, a testament to the shifting religious landscape of the area. Bethlehem is still fondly referred to as Oakland’s “mother church.” The early church services were simple affairs. No cars, just the faithful arriving on horseback or by foot, their voices joining together in hymns like “We Will Work Till Jesus Comes.” Over the years, Oakland Baptist Church has seen numerous pastors guide its congregation. From G.W. Trenary to Bobby Swift, each left their mark. The church also witnessed its members answering the call to service beyond the community. Effie Roe Maddux dedicated her life to missionary work in Brazil. Ceph Pitt, Richard N. Roe, and Dale Perry all answered the call to serve their faith in different ways. Oakland Baptist Church also adapted to the changing times. Initially, services were held just once a month, a Saturday afternoon for business meetings followed by Sunday morning worship. The church grew, adding Sunday school rooms, a parsonage, and even a baptistery. It embraced full-time preaching and shifted its business meetings to Wednesday evenings. Even today, as the times change, Oakland Baptist Church continues to serve its community. It has hosted countless weddings, funerals, and homecomings, marking the important moments in the lives of its members. The church’s journey is a reflection of the community it serves, a story woven with faith, perseverance, and a deep connection to the land.
