Gazing at Sharon Baptist Church, one can almost hear the echoes of its long history. Sharon Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It has served Washington D.C. since its inception. The church’s journey began humbly in 1876. A small log building, furnished with split-log benches, housed the congregation. This simple structure, initially known as Union Church, accommodated both Baptists and Methodists from the Bethany community. Six years later, a change occurred. The Methodist congregation ceased using the building. At the suggestion of the Baptist pastor, Rev. W. S. Fontaine, the name was changed to Sharon Baptist Church. By 1938, the church’s membership had swelled to 227. The original log structure proved inadequate for the growing congregation. Under the leadership of Rev. J. C. Gillespie, a new building arose. This modern, brick-veneer structure boasted an auditorium with a capacity of 400, along with five Sunday school classrooms. Electric lights, new pews, and a proper heating system marked a significant upgrade. Sharon Baptist Church continues its mission of service today. It’s a beacon of faith in the heart of Washington D.C.
