The hum of powerful machinery. That’s the first thing you notice at the Shek Wu Hui Sewage Treatment Works. It’s a constant low thrum a background soundtrack to a vital operation.

This isn’t just any sewage treatment plant. Shek Wu Hui is a significant part of Hong Kong’s infrastructure. For over 30 years it has quietly served Sheung Shui Fanling and the surrounding districts. It’s a silent worker processing wastewater ensuring the cleanliness of Ng Tung River. It initially handled 93,000 cubic meters of sewage daily. That’s a massive amount. Almost as much as a large lake in a day.

But Shek Wu Hui is evolving. It’s undergoing a massive transformation. It’s being upgraded from a secondary to a tertiary treatment plant. Think of it like this: secondary treatment is like a good wash. Tertiary treatment is like a deep clean plus a shine. This will dramatically improve the quality of the treated water. The capacity will almost double reaching 190,000 cubic meters per day upon completion. The project is ambitious. It involves several stages. There are new sludge treatment facilities. These include a sludge dewatering building a combined heat and power building sludge digesters and biogas holding tanks. A new ultraviolet system and a thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment system are also part of the upgrade.

This isn’t just about pipes and pumps. The Shek Wu Hui Effluent Polishing Plant as it’s now called is incorporating sustainable design. There will be public areas. Imagine a riverside walkway an ecology garden and even a birdwatching point. This facility will be more than just functional. It will become a green environmental campus. Recycled materials are used in construction. Over 40% of the plant will be green spaces.

Shek Wu Hui is also a pioneer in technology. It’s one of the first government projects to use blockchain technology. This enhances the transparency and efficiency of the construction process. Other innovative technologies are used. This includes BIM for asset management VR for safety training and even smart safety helmets.

The Shek Wu Hui Sewage Treatment Works is more than just a place to process waste. It shows a commitment to environmental responsibility technological innovation and community engagement. Its transformation is a remarkable story of progress and sustainability. It’s a testament to Hong Kong’s dedication to a clean future. It is a silent guardian of Ng Tung River and a beacon of environmental consciousness in Hong Kong.
