“Imagine a towering structure dominating the Parramatta skyline.” That’s how Howell’s House must have appeared in its prime. It was more than just a house. It was part of a larger mill complex. This mill was envisioned by George Howell.

Let’s step back to the early 19th century. George Howell, an ex-convict, saw a need. He recognized the growing agricultural output of the area. He knew a large mill was essential. This mill would grind the increasing number of crops.

Howell’s House wasn’t just any mill. It was designed to be a landmark. It would be easily visible to those arriving in Parramatta by river. Howell and his son began construction in 1828.

The location was strategically chosen. It was situated on the riverbanks south of the Gaswork’s Bridge. This ensured a constant water flow. Howell even constructed a dam to create a water reservoir. This proved controversial.

John Raine, leasing land across the river, opposed the dam. Raine worried about trespassers using it as a thoroughfare. He took matters into his own hands. Raine’s men dug up the dam on his side of the riverbank. This sparked clashes between Raine’s men and Howell’s supporters. The newspapers covered these battles extensively. Howell even gained the support of his neighbor John Macarthur.

Despite the challenges, Howell’s Mill was completed. It became a major asset. It efficiently ground local grains. The mill was a successful business. However, tragedy struck.

In 1837, John Richard Barrett, a relative, died in an accident at the mill. George Howell moved to another mill he owned. Soon after, in 1838, George Jnr. was killed. A large plank fell on him during renovations. George Snr. died a year later in 1839.

The mill passed to another son, Thomas. However, George Jnr.’s wife, Elizabeth, successfully managed it after his death. After Elizabeth died in 1866 the mill gradually fell into disrepair. It was abandoned in 1868.

While the original Howell’s House and Mill no longer stand, the Howell family’s legacy remains. They are remembered as pioneers of the Parramatta region. Their ambitious mill project shaped the area’s development. Their story is a testament to their entrepreneurial spirit. It also showcases the challenges of early colonial life.
