High above the Canterbury Plains rises Gibraltar Rock. It offers stunning 360-degree views. This volcanic tor is a popular destination within the Port Hills.

The Port Hills themselves form a natural boundary. They lie between Christchurch and Lyttelton Harbour. This makes the Port Hills an accessible recreational space. People enjoy walking and biking here. Tussock ridges and bush-clad gullies offer diverse landscapes.

For those who prefer driving, Summit Road is the best option. It winds from Gebbies Pass to Evans Pass. The road was built in the 1930s. It features three rest houses. These are the Sign of the Takahe, the Sign of the Bellbird and the Sign of the Kiwi.

Gibraltar Rock is located in Omahu Bush. This area is known for its natural beauty. The rock itself is a prominent feature of the Port Hills skyline.

But Gibraltar Rock is more than just a scenic viewpoint. It is also a popular spot for rock climbing. Though small, it is Canterbury’s smallest crag. The rock offers a handful of routes for climbers. Its excellent rock quality makes it worth visiting. The pleasant routes and nice setting enhance the experience.

To get to Gibraltar Rock, you should park at the Omahu Bush Reserve car park. It is located on the west side of Summit Road. Walk down the track through the bush. Turn off toward the gate with the NZAC sign. Follow the fenceline through the small gate. Veer off to the north. Look for waratahs with orange markers. They guide you around the north side of the ridge. After a few hundred metres, you will reach the crag.

Gibraltar Rock boasts several climbing routes. These range in difficulty. “Soft Soap” is an excellent first trad lead. “Penitence” climbs the second gully. “Dynamo Hum” ascends the overhanging wall. “Wasted Daze” takes the arête of the slabby wall. “Coup de Grace” climbs the gully groove. Climbers should be aware of the protection on each route.

The Summit Road Society owns the crag. It is open for climbing. After the Port Hills fires, it reopened on 1/3/24.

Imagine standing atop Gibraltar Rock. The wind whispers tales of ancient volcanoes. The vast Canterbury Plains stretch out before you. The challenges of the climb now fade away.
