Ever wondered how a church finds its home? Sts Michael & Gabriel Antiochian Orthodox Church, right here on Belmore Street, has a fascinating story to tell. Established in Sydney in December 2001, Sts Michael & Gabriel was the first Antiochian Orthodox parish in New South Wales dedicated to preaching in English. The church began its journey in Homebush West, sharing space with St Columba’s Anglican Church. Imagine the mix of traditions and hymns filling the air. In 2004, the growing congregation moved to the West Ryde Community Hall. For eight years, the hall hosted not just weekly services, but also spiritual retreats and the development of Orthodox publications in English. Can you picture the community spirit blossoming within those walls? The dream of a permanent home led the parishioners on a fundraising mission. In 2009, under the leadership of Father John El-Karaan, they secured a deposit on this very property at 72 Belmore Street. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for Sts Michael & Gabriel. With Archbishop Paul Saliba’s blessing, construction began in May 2011. The foundation stones were blessed in August of that same year, a symbolic moment captured in time. Just over a year later, on Christmas Eve 2012, the first service echoed through the newly built church. A Christmas Eve to remember, filled with the joy of a dream realized. The journey of Sts Michael & Gabriel is a testament to the dedication and vision of its community. From shared spaces to a permanent sanctuary, the church stands as a beacon of faith and fellowship right here in Ryde.
