Did the silent stones whisper secrets of bygone eras? Here at the Kamień Piłsudskiego, they certainly do. This unassuming glacial erratic, standing tall amidst the pines of Wesoła’s Zielona district, holds a story of defiance and national pride. Kamień Piłsudskiego isn’t just a rock. It’s a monument to a pivotal moment in Poland’s struggle for independence.

The year was 1917. Poland groaned under German occupation. Yet, the spirit of freedom flickered brightly in the hearts of the Polish people. On April 29th, right here, where the Kamień Piłsudskiego now stands, a bold display of Polish military strength took place. The Polish Military Organisation (POW) held open military exercises, a direct challenge to the occupying forces. Imagine the scene: hundreds of Polish soldiers drilling, their movements crisp and precise. Józef Piłsudski himself, then Brigadier General and head of the Military Department of the Provisional Council of State, oversaw the maneuvers.

The exercises were not just a show of force. They were a declaration of intent. A message to the Germans that the Polish spirit remained unbroken. Even more audacious, German officers, including Major Keppel, a representative of the occupation authorities, were present. They witnessed firsthand the growing strength of the Polish resistance.

Twenty years later, in April 1937, this granite boulder was erected to commemorate that audacious act of defiance. The Kamień Piłsudskiego initially stood between two pillars topped with Hussar wings, a symbol of Polish military prowess. Sadly, these pillars are no longer standing. The inscription on the stone, however, remains clear. It reads: “On the fields of Wawer and Zielona on 29.IV.1917, Józef Piłsudski, teaching Poles to fight for freedom, trained a volunteer army gathered secretly in the Polish Military Organisation.”

Remarkably, the Kamień Piłsudskiego survived both World War II and the communist era. It became a rallying point for members of the democratic opposition in the 1980s. Today, local Independence Day celebrations are held here, a testament to the enduring spirit of Polish freedom. The Kamień Piłsudskiego stands as a silent witness to Poland’s unwavering pursuit of independence. A reminder of the courage and determination of those who dared to dream of a free Poland.
