The Lightwing Sculpture. A beacon of creativity and community spirit, it soars above us. This remarkable structure, the largest sculpture in the Wellington region, isn’t just a pretty sight. It stands as a testament to the often-overlooked industrial heart of Seaview. Crafted from 20 tonnes of steel, the Lightwing stretches an impressive 6 meters high and 10 meters wide. Its design, a series of interconnected curves and arcs, was inspired by the surrounding landscape. The artist, Andrew Thomas, drew inspiration from the flowing lines of the nearby hills, the wings of a native heron, and even the crashing waves of the sea. But the Lightwing Sculpture is more than just a representation of nature. Its creation was a true community effort. Businesses in the Seaview area contributed their skills and resources to bring the project to life. Local companies provided engineering expertise, blasting, painting, and even helped with the installation. This collaborative spirit transformed the Lightwing from a simple idea into a powerful symbol of Seaview’s identity and resilience.
