Nestled within the bustling cityscape, Shogenji Temple offers a tranquil escape. It stands as a testament to resilience and spiritual strength. Shogenji Temple is a hidden gem of Tokyo, offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich religious history. The temple’s origins trace back to a time of great spiritual fervor in Japan. Legend says it was initially built as a Tendai temple in 817 CE. This was during Saicho’s pivotal journey to Eastern Japan. Later, in the Kamakura period, Shogenji Temple transitioned to the Rinzai School of Zen Buddhism. This shift marked a significant change in its spiritual focus. The temple then adopted the name Shogenji. This happened around 1207-1211, during the Jogen (also read as Shogen) imperial era. Shogenji Temple played an important role in the community. During the Muromachi period, the bakufu designated it as one of the regional “peace-protection temples,” known as ankoku-ji. However, tragedy struck when Takeda Shingen invaded Suruga. Shogenji Temple was burned to the ground during this conflict. It was later rebuilt. A Shinto shrine, “Divine Protection Mountain” (shingosan), was added to the temple grounds during the Edo period. The temple’s full name became Shingosan Shogen Ankoku Zen-ji, reflecting its blended spiritual heritage. Shogenji Temple today remains an active place of worship. It is led by Zen master Soiku Shigematsu. The temple serves as a spiritual sanctuary amid Tokyo’s urban landscape. It continues to carry the echoes of centuries of history and devotion within its walls.
