The future for Guishan is ambitious. Sixty square kilometers of land reclamation. That’s six times its current size. Imagine new homes for pensioners. Think of modern container terminals. Even correctional facilities will find a place here. This massive project aims to alleviate Hong Kong’s space shortage. New facilities will replace old ones in Hong Kong. This will free up valuable land.
Guishan’s development is part of a larger plan. Several other islands in the Pearl River estuary will be reclaimed. Dazhi Zhou Xiaozhi Zhou Qing Zhou and Sanjiaoshan islands are all included.
But Guishan’s future is not without its questions. There are concerns about Hong Kong’s sovereignty. The project falls under Zhuhai’s jurisdiction. This makes it independent of Hong Kong’s control. Direct investment from the Chinese government is possible.
A bridge or an underwater tunnel is planned. This will connect Guishan to Lantau Island. Another idea is to link Guishan to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.
