Did Arnold Palmer ever imagine his first PGA Tour victory would happen at Weston Golf and Country Club? It was 1955 when a young Palmer etched his name into the club’s history, winning the Canadian Open. Weston Golf and Country Club, nestled in Toronto, Ontario, has witnessed more than a century of golfing triumphs and curling camaraderie. Designed by the legendary Willie Park Jr., the course opened in 1915. The 18-hole course stretches over 6,807 yards, presenting a par-72 challenge with a course rating of 73.2. In 2018, ScoreGolf ranked it 31st in Canada. Beyond its lush greens and challenging fairways, Weston Golf and Country Club hosted the Canadian Amateur Golf event in 2015 and the Canadian Mixed Curling event in 2016 to celebrate its centennial. The club also held an annual elite amateur men’s tournament, the Willie Park Jr. Memorial, starting in 1925. One of Canada’s most accomplished golfers, Warren Sye, honed his skills at Weston. He boasts two Canadian Amateur titles (1990 and 1994), five Ontario Amateur titles, and was runner-up at the 1998 U.S. Mid-Amateur. His achievements earned him a Life Membership at Weston and induction into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. Weston Golf and Country Club even had a curling rink from 1956, offering members winter recreation. Unfortunately, it closed in 2018. The club’s history intertwines with the evolution of golf course architecture itself. Willie Park Jr., a pioneer in the field, saw course design as an art. He believed in creating challenges for skilled players, but not at the expense of the average golfer’s enjoyment. Park Jr.’s design philosophy is evident at Weston, a course where strategy and enjoyment go hand in hand. His legacy continues to shape the golfing experience at Weston Golf and Country Club, inspiring golfers of all skill levels.
