1796. A new school opens its doors in Stuttgart. It’s a “Real- und Bürgerschule,” founded by Duke Friedrich Eugen. This is the very seed that would eventually blossom into the Wilhelms-Gymnasium we stand before today. Wilhelms-Gymnasium wasn’t always here on Albstrasse. It began its life in Stuttgart-Mitte, born from a need for a different kind of education. The original school became so popular it had to split in two. One half became the Friedrich-Eugens-Realschule. The other, our Wilhelms-Realschule, moved to Hohenheimer Strasse. The focus here at Wilhelms-Realschule shifted. Math and science took center stage. By 1900, it became the Wilhelms-Oberrealschule. It grew so much that, just three years later, they had to limit the number of students. The world changed, and so did the Wilhelms-Oberrealschule. In 1937, it was renamed the Wilhelms-Oberschule für Jungen. After the Second World War, the school faced challenges. Space was tight, especially with the influx of students from surrounding areas. The 1960s brought a new era. A team of architects led by Professor Volkart designed a new home. This striking new complex on Albstrasse is the same Wilhelms-Gymnasium you see before you. In 1963, students and teachers moved into their modern, star-shaped building. It boasted classrooms, a gymnasium, and even a swimming pool. The Wilhelms-Gymnasium became a beacon, drawing students from all over. Its catchment area extended far south. The next nearest Gymnasium was all the way in Tübingen. The school expanded, even needing to add a pavilion with four more classrooms to accommodate the burgeoning student body. The Wilhelms-Gymnasium evolved again in 1973. It opened its doors to girls, changing the school’s atmosphere forever. Today, Wilhelms-Gymnasium is a vibrant institution with a rich history. It has seen kings, wars, and immense societal change. Yet it stands as a testament to the enduring power of education. This institution continued to adapt. It adopted the G8 system and then offered G9 alongside it. It even planned a new cafeteria. The Wilhelms-Gymnasium isn’t just a building. It’s a living story, written by generations of students and teachers.
