Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute

In 1970, a new beacon of learning arose in Scarborough. Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute opened its doors, welcoming eager students. Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute is named after a prominent figure in Canadian history, Sir Oliver Mowat. He served as the Premier of Ontario for an impressive 24 years. The school’s motto, “De Monte Alto,” meaning “From a mount high,” reflects its aspiration for academic excellence. Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute wasn’t just a building. It was a community. The initial opening ceremony actually took place in the spring of the following year, on April 30, 1971. The school’s 50th-anniversary celebration, planned for April 2020, was unfortunately postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally, the school mascot was inspired by Queen’s University’s Golden Gaels. However, in 2002, a student referendum led to the adoption of the Mustangs as the new mascot and team name. The mascot is affectionately called “Monte,” a nod to the school’s Latin motto. Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute offers a comprehensive range of academic programs. Students can explore various subjects, including arts, business, computer science, and more. Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute has also been known for its exceptional woodworking facilities, particularly for the Grade 9 integrated and design programs. The automotive shop boasts a professional-grade garage. Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute is more than just academics. It’s a place where students can participate in various extracurricular activities. These include the Student Administrative Council, Prefects Council, and many more. The school even has its own newspaper, the Mowat Misprints. Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute stands as a testament to its namesake’s commitment to education and community building. It continues to nurture young minds and prepare them for the future.
