Have you heard of Sai Wan Tau? Sai Wan Tau is more than just a peak; it’s a silent observer, overlooking a district steeped in history. Sai Wan, also known as Western district, or simply Western, encompasses areas like Sai Ying Pun, Shek Tong Tsui, Belcher Bay, and Kennedy Town. Sai Wan Tau, reaching 194 meters high, offers a unique vantage point of this fascinating district. Sai Wan has transformed over the centuries. In the 1800s, Sai Ying Pun became a melting pot of Chinese immigrants and Europeans, separated by High Street, a line drawn between cultures. The late 1800s brought modernization: sewerage systems and paved streets. However, tragedy struck in the 1890s with a devastating bubonic plague outbreak, particularly impacting Sheung Fung Lane and nearby Tai Ping Shan. Meanwhile, Shek Tong Tsui, named after an ancient stone pond, flourished as a red-light district in the early 1900s. Cantonese opera theaters and restaurants sprang up, catering to the wealthy elite drawn to the area’s vibrant nightlife. This era inspired numerous novels and films, including the iconic “Rouge” (1987). Sai Wan’s story also intertwines with prominent figures. Kennedy Town, the western part of Victoria City, is named after Governor Arthur Edward Kennedy, who initiated land reclamation there in 1886. Sai Wan even holds a boundary stone from 1903, a tangible reminder of the city’s expansion. Sai Wan Tau has witnessed these changes, the hardships, and the growth. From its peak, you can almost hear the echoes of the past. It’s a place where history whispers, a reminder of Sai Wan’s journey through time.
