Did Napoleon ever imagine a bust of himself gracing Warsaw’s Insurgents Square? Here at the Pomnik Napoleona Bonaparte, his gaze seems to capture every passerby. This bronze bust, standing tall at 4.5 meters, depicts Napoleon in his uniform, complete with the National Order of the Legion of Honour. The Pomnik Napoleona Bonaparte isn’t just a statue. It’s a symbol of a complex relationship between Poland and France. Originally unveiled in 1921 to mark the centenary of Napoleon’s death, the first monument quickly deteriorated. A second Pomnik Napoleona Bonaparte, designed by Michał Kamieński, was erected in 1923 near the Higher War School. This monument, too, met its demise after World War II, dismantled by the communist authorities. The bust, however, survived, finding refuge in the Polish Army Museum. Decades later, the Polish Section of the Association of Mutual Assistance of Members of the Legion of Honour spearheaded a project to resurrect the Pomnik Napoleona Bonaparte. Thanks to their fundraising efforts, a replica was created by sculptors Paweł Pietrusiński and Marek Żebrowski. In 2011, on the 190th anniversary of Napoleon’s death, the Pomnik Napoleona Bonaparte was unveiled here, at the site of the very first monument. The square, once named after Napoleon, now bears the name Warsaw Insurgents Square. The Pomnik Napoleona Bonaparte serves as a reminder of Poland’s gratitude for French support and their enduring fascination with the French Emperor. It symbolizes the intertwining histories of these two nations. Look closely at the pedestal. You can see two eagles poised for flight, a bronze crown, and Napoleon’s initials. A plaque details the monument’s history. The Pomnik Napoleona Bonaparte stands as a testament to a complex historical figure and his enduring legacy in Poland. It’s a story of gratitude, destruction, and ultimately, rebirth.
