Founded in 1876 Mount Carmel Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Imagine 275 members leaving Second Baptist Church to establish this new congregation. They worshipped in various locations in Northwest D.C. including the Old Columbia Law Building on Fifth Street. This wasn’t just a church it was a community.
In 1914 under Reverend Dr William Henry Jernigan Mount Carmel moved to its current location at 901 Third Street NW. This move marked a significant step in the church’s growth and stability. Jernigan’s leadership lasted 46 years. He oversaw the founding of several institutions including the Washington Baptist Seminary. Think of the impact such a leader had on the community.
The church continued to flourish. Reverend Rossie L Patterson served as pastor from 1960 to 1986. He oversaw the construction of a new building in 1980 a testament to the community’s unwavering faith. The mortgage was burned in 1986. This must have been an incredible celebration.
Over the years Mount Carmel had ten pastors each leaving their own mark on the congregation. Reverend Albert Gallmon Jr ordained Lisa D Cheathem the church’s first female minister. Reverend Joseph N Evans the tenth pastor implemented a five-year plan to boost the church’s life by 20 percent. This included creating a website and adding new ministries. The church even partnered with Quadrangle and The Wilkes Company on a major real estate project.
Mount Carmel Baptist Church is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living history a vibrant community of faith. It’s a place where generations have worshipped prayed and found strength. It’s a story of perseverance growth and unwavering belief. A story still being written today.
