“Enter at your own risk.” That’s the silent warning surrounding the mysterious Yashirazu no Mori. People call it the Unknown Forest Shrine.
Today we stand before the enigmatic Torii gate. It marks the entrance to a place shrouded in legend. What secrets lie within this seemingly small grove?
The Unknown Forest Shrine is near Motoyawata Station. It stands along National Route 14. This location is in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture. This spot is known as “Yashirazu no Mori” or “The Forest You’ll Never Know”. Some call it “The Unknown Forest of Yawata.”
The shrine presents a strange sight. It is an anomaly amid the urban sprawl. Fences surround it. A Shinto shrine gate stands guard. The sign designates this place as the Unknown Forest Shrine.
Local lore says never to enter. It is a forbidden place. People whisper that it is haunted or cursed.
Legends about the Unknown Forest Shrine date back to the Edo period. Back then, it was already a mystery spot. Locals and travelers alike knew its name. Many local accounts mention the grove.
Old texts describe the grove as not particularly large. They say it was dense and impenetrable. Its dimensions were about 18 meters wide and deep. Bamboo and thickets formed its heart.
Until the late Showa era, the grove was full of old trees. These trees included lacquer trees pines cedars cypresses and chestnuts. But bamboo has encroached in recent years. Now, few trees remain.
Entering the grove may lead to misfortune. Many theories attempt to explain this.
Some say it was the site of a camp of Yamato Takeru. He was a legendary prince. This made it sacred.
Others believe it was the former site of Kuzuhara Yawata Shrine. This would also make it sacred ground.
Another tale links it to Taira no Masakado. He was a rebel against the Heian government in the 10th century. Perhaps the location was considered unlucky. Maybe it became a haunted gateway.
A legend says Taira no Yoshimasa built a fortress there. This fortress was made with a secret formation. It supposedly brought misfortune to anyone who entered.
Some think the grave of Taira no Masakado’s father Yoshimochi is here. Because he was a rebel it became taboo.
Another story involves Minamoto no Yoritomo. He supposedly trespassed. This angered a local deity. Ever since, people have warned against entering.
A final theory suggests poisonous gas emanates from the grove’s center.
Regardless, the Unknown Forest Shrine remains an enigma. Its aura of mystery and foreboding endures to this day.
