Seven co-ed floors. That’s what makes McCarthy Hall unique. This Georgetown University residence hall is part of the Southwest Quad. It stands proudly alongside Kennedy and Reynolds Halls. Together they house approximately 780 students. McCarthy Hall isn’t just a dorm. It’s a vibrant community.
Each floor boasts a communal space. A full kitchen is included. Students share meals. They watch TV together. They study collaboratively. It fosters friendships. It encourages collaboration. It creates a sense of belonging. This is vital for the college experience.
McCarthy Hall offers more than just rooms. It’s home to distinctive living-learning communities. The Transfer Living Learning Community thrives here. So does the Justice & Diversity in Action Living Learning Community. These communities connect students with shared interests. They share backgrounds. They share aspirations.
The hall itself has many features. It has single double and triple rooms. Two study rooms are on each floor. So are four bathrooms. A common lounge with a kitchen is a central hub. A faculty member and a residential minister reside in McCarthy Hall. They provide support and guidance to students.
McCarthy Hall played a vital role. It was part of Georgetown’s strategy. Existing dorms were being renovated or decommissioned. McCarthy helped provide more on-campus housing for undergraduates. This reduced the need for off-campus living.
Beyond the individual hall. The Southwest Quad is a community. Laundry facilities are conveniently located in McCarthy Hall. Mail is in Kennedy Hall. Vending machines are in Reynolds Hall. Even a volleyball court exists in the courtyard. A charcoal grill is there too. And Hoya Snaxa a student-run convenience store offers snacks and supplies.
McCarthy Hall is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a place of learning community and belonging. It’s a significant part of the Georgetown University experience. It’s a home away from home for many students. The legacy of J. Thomas McCarthy lives on in this vibrant hall. His family’s gift ensured the creation of this vital student community.
