From this vantage point, imagine the rolling hills of Dívčí hrady teeming with the energy of women warriors. You see, long ago, according to Alois Jirásek, these very hills echoed with the sounds of rebellion during the legendary Dívčí válka, the “Maiden’s War”. Legend says that after their beloved Queen Libuše died, the women, led by the fearless Vlasta, refused to submit to male rule and built a stronghold right here, on Dívčí hrady. Their fortress stood defiant against the men’s fortress, Vyšehrad, which you can see across the Vltava River. The women, skilled in warfare and strategy, fought fiercely and even emerged victorious in several battles. Although the ruins you see today bear no obvious signs of their rebellious stand, the spirit of Vlasta and her warriors seems to linger. Look closely. Can you imagine their shouts echoing across the valleys, challenging the very notion of male dominance? While the story of the Maiden’s War is likely more folklore than fact, it speaks volumes about the enduring spirit of this place and the women who once called it home.
