Hidden amongst the rolling hills of the Českolipsko region, the Špejchar stands as a testament to time. This former granary, once part of a sprawling estate, has witnessed centuries of change. The Špejchar’s story begins long ago, when it stood alongside a residential house and barn. These three structures formed the heart of a thriving agricultural community. However, the 20th century brought division. The estate was split, disrupting the harmony between buildings. The Špejchar, along with the barn, became separated from the main house. This division mirrored the turbulent history of the region, echoing the displacement of the Sudeten Germans decades earlier. The once vibrant buildings fell into disrepair, a silent testament to a bygone era. But the Špejchar’s story doesn’t end there. A new owner breathed life back into the neglected structure. The granary was reborn as a recreational home, its original character carefully preserved. A new entrance portal with a French window was added, bathing the interior in natural light. The internal spaces were reimagined. The main living area now occupies the entire original floor. Windows on all sides offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This open-plan design seamlessly integrates the kitchen, dining, and relaxation areas. Only solitary blocks of furniture delineate these spaces: a kitchen unit, a fireplace with storage, and a discreet box housing the bathroom and essential utilities. The architects cleverly exposed the original building materials on the exterior walls: sandstone blocks, rough tuff stone, and fired bricks. These elements, meticulously cleaned and repaired, tell a silent story of the building’s past. A white lime coating unifies these diverse materials, creating a textured facade that shifts with the changing sunlight. Inside, the Špejchar boasts a unique feature. The ceiling of the main living space has been removed, revealing the original roof structure. This structure was carefully dismantled, supplemented, and reassembled, preserving the historic wooden elements and even the carpenter’s signature. Airy wooden slats, reminiscent of the building’s hop-drying past, now adorn the roof. Part of the roof has been transformed into a sleeping loft. This cozy space, connected to the living area below, offers a tranquil retreat. The Špejchar is more than just a renovated building. It is a living story, a testament to resilience and the enduring power of history.
