Standing before you, a testament to time, stands Skå kyrka. This church, nestled in the heart of Stockholm County, whispers tales of a bygone era. It’s a place where history and faith intertwine. The oldest parts of Skå kyrka date back to the 1170s, making it one of the oldest churches in the county. Its origins are shrouded in mystique, but its architecture hints at the church’s past. The original structure was a humble building, with a short nave and a square, perhaps apsidal, chancel.

What truly sets Skå kyrka apart is its unique circular tower. The tower’s peculiar design, attached to the west side of the nave, is almost unheard of in the region. Some theorize that the tower was originally a freestanding structure, a defensive stronghold known as a kastal, later integrated into the church. The use of similar towers for defensive purposes is found in Skåne and Holstein. Skå is said to be connected with the “Kol de sco” who had their seat here, and who, in the 1180s, rose against their brother-in-law, King Knut Eriksson, and was later killed. Over time, the church expanded, its chancel elongated and a sacristy added in the 14th century. A porch was added to the south side in the 15th century. The round tower was eventually replaced by a square one.

The church you see today is a result of a major reconstruction following a fire in 1695. It was transformed into a hall church with a polygonal, eastern chancel, a new south cross-arm, and a distinctive vaulted ceiling. Skå kyrka received its current tower in 1858. Skå kyrka stands proudly as a silent witness to the passage of time. It’s a reminder of the enduring faith of those who came before us, and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
