How about a journey back to 1862? That’s when Calvary Baptist Church was founded right here in Washington D.C. It stands as a testament to faith community and architectural brilliance.
Calvary Baptist Church has a rich history. It began with a group of prominent Baptists who supported the Union during the Civil War. Their vision led to the creation of a church that would become a landmark.
Adolf Cluss designed Calvary’s sanctuary. He was a U.S.-German architect known for many important buildings in D.C. Joseph Wildrich von Kammerhueber a Bavarian was his partner. Together they brought Cluss’s vision to life.
The church’s tall spire was once a downtown landmark. A major storm weakened it in 1914. The spire was removed but it was restored in February 2005. It returned to the neighborhood skyline.
The original building was dedicated in 1866. Sadly a fire gutted it during a blizzard in December 1867. A faulty heating system may have been to blame. Reconstruction began quickly and the current building was used in the winter of 1868. It was officially dedicated in July 1869.
The interior has changed significantly over the years. Balconies were added on the north and south sides. These broke up the tall stained-glass windows. A large set of organ pipes was placed at the front. This obscured a small rose window. The organ was originally in the back. A rose window is still visible at the eastern end.
Calvary Baptist Church is the founding church of the Northern Baptist Convention. This is now the American Baptist Churches USA. It was also a leading church in the Baptist Sunday School movement.
The church uniquely had the presidents of both American Baptists and Southern Baptists as members. Clarence Cranford was the American Baptists president. Brooks Hays a former congressman was the Southern Baptists president.
Calvary focused on its relationship with the Latino community. It introduced bilingual services. The church partnered with a church in El Salvador. This was led by Rev. Edgar Palacios.
Calvary has been active in immigration reform efforts. It also supports marriage equality. The church founded Calvary Women’s Shelter in 1983. It was the first women’s homeless shelter in the D.C. area. It is now known as Calvary Women’s Services.
Many notable figures have been members of Calvary Baptist Church. These include President Warren G. Harding. Also Charles Evans Hughes. He was a former Governor of New York and Chief Justice. Amos Kendall the 8th United States Postmaster General was a member too.
Adolf Cluss was more than an architect. He was also a city planner and engineer. He helped shape the streets and houses of Washington D.C. Cluss also had a past as a Marxist writer and organizer. He concealed this part of his life. He was friends with Karl Marx.
