By March 1987, the fund had reached $76 million. The SEYM Fund was established. The SEYM Fund Ordinance was enacted in April 1987.
The aim of the Fund is to encourage education and research for the people of Hong Kong. The Edward Youde Memorial Fund helps outstanding students. It recognizes exemplary working adults. It supports educational activities. The Fund distributes awards under eight schemes. It operates one sponsorship scheme.
Over 930 individuals receive scholarships and awards each year. Around 13,000 students benefit from the sponsorship scheme. By the 2023/24 academic year, over $266 million had been disbursed. More than 865,000 individuals have benefited.
The Edward Youde Memorial Fund offers fellowships for overseas studies. It also provides fellowships for local studies. Scholarships are available for both overseas and local studies. Memorial Medals and prizes are awarded to senior secondary school students. There are fellowships and scholarships for disabled students. The Fund also recognizes outstanding apprentices. Awards for self-improvement are given to working adults. Sponsorship is provided to young friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
