From the weathered stones of Židovský hřbitov Blevice, a silent story unfolds. This Jewish cemetery, nestled on the southern edge of the forest road to Zákolany, whispers tales of centuries past. Židovský hřbitov Blevice, established in the first half of the 17th century, served the Jewish communities of Ješina and later Velvary. It stands as a poignant reminder of a vibrant history. Around 300 tombstones, some dating back to the early 18th century, populate this sacred ground. Among them lies the tomb of Rabbi Jacob Utitze of Velvary. The most recent burial, marked by the tombstone of economic manager Julia Munk, dates to 1945. Židovský hřbitov Blevice also holds the remains of several refugees from the Holocaust, their stories forever etched in the silent stones. The cemetery’s caretaker’s house, likely built in 1884, bears a Hebrew inscription. It translates to “From dust, you are and to dust, you shall return,” a solemn reminder of our shared mortality. The inscription above the pedestrian gate reads 1885, marking another milestone in the cemetery’s long history. A small portion of the Židovský hřbitov Blevice is now a garden. Yet, the larger part, containing the majority of the tombstones, is carefully maintained, ensuring the stories etched in stone continue to be heard. Restoration efforts in recent years have seen repairs to the quarry stone wall in 2008 and the restoration of numerous tombstones in 2009. The work continues, a testament to the dedication to preserving this historical treasure. Židovský hřbitov Blevice offers a window into the past, where the echoes of lives lived resonate through the quiet stillness.
