What kind of name is Norsborg anyway? We’re standing at the gateway to a fascinating story. Norsborg, as you might have guessed, wasn’t always a bustling suburb of Stockholm. It was once a grand country estate known as Borg, a peaceful patch in the Botkyrka parish. Imagine sprawling fields bordering the shimmering waters of Vårbyfjärden. In the late 1700s, the estate was owned by Count Johan Liljencrantz. He decided to rename the estate Norsborg in a gesture of love for his wife, Eleonora Stjernstedt. The Count had exquisite taste. He commissioned the construction of Norsborg Manor and the creation of an elaborate English-style park. You can almost picture strolling through the gardens, happening upon a charming gazebo designed by the renowned architect Olof Tempelman. But Norsborg’s story takes a dramatic turn in 1900. The City of Stockholm, in need of a reliable water source, purchased the estate for 185,000 kronor. Their objective? To tap into the pristine waters of nearby Lake Bornsjön. This marked the beginning of Norsborg’s transformation from a tranquil country estate to a vital component of Stockholm’s infrastructure. They built the Norsborg waterworks right here, a true feat of engineering for its time. Even today, this plant stands as a testament to their foresight, providing a staggering 80,000,000 cubic meters of fresh water to Stockholm annually. So, as you explore the modern Norsborg, remember, beneath the surface lies a captivating history. It’s a tale of love, transformation, and the enduring legacy of a remarkable engineering project.
