Have you ever noticed a house that seems out of place? Right here, in Vienna’s fourth district, between the well-known Kettenbrückengasse and the slightly less known Heumühlgasse, stands a small house. At first glance, it might not seem remarkable. Yet, surrounded by buildings with vastly different architecture, it begs a closer look. The ehem. Neumühle, as it is called, holds a secret, a story woven deeply into the fabric of Vienna’s history. This little house is one of Vienna’s oldest standing structures, its roots stretching back to the 14th century.

The ehem. Neumühle wasn’t always a house. Once, it was a bustling watermill, a vital part of the city’s early economy. The area where the Naschmarkt now stands once held a river which is largely covered today. But, along the river was a creek called the Mühlbach. Along this Mühlbach were several watermills, and the ehem. Neumühle was one of them. The name “Neumühle” actually means ‘new mill’ which might seem odd for a building this old, but it reflects the mill’s history. It burned down in the 1520s, was rebuilt within the same century, and has endured various ups and downs since then.

The ehem. Neumühle endured through the centuries and stands as a silent witness to Vienna’s evolution from a medieval city to a vibrant metropolis. It whispers stories of emperors and bakers, of bustling markets and quiet moments by the riverbank. Perhaps you can imagine the millers working diligently to grind grain, the rhythmic sound of the waterwheel churning in the background, the scent of freshly baked bread wafting through the air. Though the mill’s machinery has long since faded, the ehem. Neumühle remains as a poignant reminder of their hard work.
