What if the stones of a church could speak? St Columb’s Anglican Church in Hawthorn Victoria might tell tales of faith community and transformation. Today we stand before St Columb’s a beautiful building steeped in history. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of faith.
St Columb’s Anglican Church has a fascinating story. Its origins trace back to 1879. It began as a chapel for Christ Church in Hawthorn. The church is named after St Columb’s Cathedral in Derry Northern Ireland. This honors Saint Columba an Irish abbot who brought Christianity to Scotland.
The main building’s design came from George Wharton in 1882-1883. He chose the Decorated Gothic architectural style. James Anderson constructed it in the 1880s. They used bluestone and freestone. The first sermon was delivered here in 1883. However the entire church building wasn’t done until 1907. Architects H.W. & F.B. Tompkins completed the work.
Look around. Notice the Large Hall on Burwood Road. It once served as a Sunday School. It also hosted the Sunday 6pm service and other events. There’s also the Small Hall a former nursery school. Today it’s used for Sunday 10am kids church playgroups choir and dance lessons.
The stained glass here is truly remarkable. William Montgomery Alan Sumner and others designed it. Each window tells a story. They capture moments of faith and dedication. The original pipe organ was built by William Stone. But in 1923 it was sold to St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The current pipe organ was installed in 1923. Roberts Ltd made it. The National Trust of Australia recognizes its significance.
In 2007 St Columb’s underwent some changes. The old pews were replaced with padded seats. Since 2012 the church has received generous donations. These gifts came from Louise and Graham Tuckwell of the Tuckwell Foundation.
St Columb’s is more than just a building. It’s a living community. It offers worship services and activities for all ages. The current vicar Rev. Mark McDonald leads the congregation. You are welcome to join the Sunday services. They have services at 10am in the church and 6pm.
Tintern Grammar has close ties to St Columb’s. The school was once located near the church in Hawthorn. School functions like prize nights were held in the church hall. Several pages are devoted to the window gifted by the school to the church in the late 1950s.
