Once upon a time a giant Ferris wheel graced this very spot. This is the site of Cologne’s Tivoli Park. A park that thrived for only a brief period. It’s hard to imagine now. This open space was once a bustling amusement park. Germany’s largest in 1971.

The Tivoli Park opened in 1971. It was part of a national horticultural show. Cologne had already hosted one in 1957. This time the park was built in the Riehler Aue. It was inspired by Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens and Vienna’s Prater. The park aimed to create a unique world. Not just a collection of rides.

The Tivoli was divided into themed areas. Think Germany South America France and Turkey. Each section offered local food and drinks. Rides ranged from a massive Ferris wheel. It reached 40 meters high. To the Super 8 rollercoaster. A classic carousel was also featured. There was a go-kart track and a disco called Old Mexico. An elephant circus was a big draw.

However the park’s success was short-lived. Even with high attendance initially. The park struggled financially. The initial investment failed to deliver the anticipated returns. The three founders argued. The park received negative press. The two-mark entrance fee didn’t include rides. The food and drink quality was also criticized.

By 1975 the Tivoli was bankrupt. In 1976 the rides were removed. The buildings were demolished. The Cologne City Gazette reported only an ass a goat and a small wooden house remained. Some rides survived. The Ferris wheel is now in the Netherlands. The Super 8 rollercoaster is likely in the USA. The Wave Flyer carousel. It now appears at Cologne festivals as the Swan Flyer. A reminder of the forgotten park between Deutz and Mülheim.

Today this empty space is a poignant reminder. A reminder of a park that once brought joy to many. It is a testament to the fleeting nature of popular entertainment. This is the story of the Cologne Tivoli. A tale of ambition short-lived success and a legacy of memories.
