Established in 1970 Shenkar College has a rich history. It began as a college for fashion and textile technology. Its goal was to train skilled workers for Israel’s booming textile and clothing industry. The college is named after Arieh Shenkar a pioneer in the Israeli textile industry. He also founded the Manufacturers Association of Israel.
Shenkar wasn’t always located in Ramat Gan. Initially it occupied a former ORT high school building. This building is now known as the Frances and David Pernick Building. It’s the oldest structure on the main campus. A second building the Edward D and Anna Mitchell Building opened in 2002. This seven-story building houses classrooms and seminar rooms. It was built with help from the Mitchell Foundation the Lorber family and the Manufacturers Association of Israel.
Shenkar’s impact extends far beyond its Ramat Gan campus. The college has a Practical Engineering school in Tel Aviv. This school works with Israel’s Industry Trade and Labor Ministry and National Institute for Technological Training. Shenkar also boasts impressive research facilities including the Rose Archive for Textiles and Costumes. It also has the Kadar Design and Technology Center and the Edelstein Center for the Analysis of Ancient Artifacts. These facilities contribute to Shenkar’s reputation as a leading design school.
