The imposing bronze statue of Amida Nyorai greets you. This is Nishikiyama Eifukuji Temple. Its history is a journey. A journey through time and relocation.

Founded in 1629 by a priest from the Musashi province. The temple initially stood in Fukagawa Shinmachi. This was not its final resting place. It was moved in 1653 to Koishikawa Shiroyama. This location proved temporary as well. By 1665 it found a new home in Honcho. Its journey wasn’t over yet.

The Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 caused significant damage. The temple was then moved to its current location. Nishikiyama Eifukuji Temple stands as a testament to resilience. A testament to enduring faith.

Within the temple grounds lies a large black pagoda. This structure boasts a unique story. It was created in 1261. The year before Kublai Khan’s Mongol invasion. It is said to depict the character for “passage” or “course”. A fitting tribute considering the temple’s own journey. The pagoda was donated in 1794 by a doctor. Dr. Kenmotsu of the Edo castle hospital.

The temple’s present site also holds stories of fires. These fires tested the temple’s fortitude. The large black pagoda even survived a large fire. It stood as a symbol of hope amidst the flames. Today a festival called “Daikoku Tenjin Festival” is held annually. This is a tribute to the temple’s guardian deity. This deity protected it through the fires. Many consider it a symbol of the temple’s perseverance.

Several notable figures are buried within the temple grounds. This includes the writer Ibara Shiko. Also the Edo physician Hayashi Yasusada. The temple is more than just a place of worship. It is a living museum. A museum of faith resilience and history.

Nishikiyama Eifukuji Temple is a place of quiet contemplation. It is also a vibrant hub for cultural events. This serene space provides peace in the heart of Tokyo. The temple continues to serve its community. It does so with unwavering devotion. Come visit Nishikiyama Eifukuji Temple. Experience a piece of Tokyo’s rich history.
