Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium has a history that stretches back to 1984. It wasn’t always known by that name. Initially it was Davis Ford Park. A year later it became Prince William County Stadium. In 1996 it was finally named G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium. Then in 2018, it gained the Northwest Federal Field title through a sponsorship.
For many years, Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium was the home of the Potomac Nationals. From 1984 until 2019, fans gathered here to cheer on their team. The stadium sits near the McCoart Government Center. It is also close to the Prince William County Service Authority.
Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium can hold 6000 people. The field dimensions are 315 feet down the lines. It measures 400 feet to straight-away center field. An electronic scoreboard displays images and videos.
The dugouts at Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium have an interesting design. They are located at field level. Until 2018 there was no fence separating them from the field. Renovations added netting for safety.
In 2011 the field at Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium was upgraded to MLB standards. This was necessary after a series had to be moved due to unsafe conditions.
The stadium faced a challenge in 2012. A fire broke out destroying the business offices. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The Nationals’ mascot Uncle Slam was sidelined for a while.
The Potomac Nationals sought a new ballpark for years. They finally moved to Fredericksburg in 2020. Their last regular season game at Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium was in August 2019.
Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium has seen its share of memorable moments. The record attendance was 10,789 people on July 4, 2009. The aluminum seating bowl may not be the most comfortable. But it holds a lot of baseball memories. Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium is more than just metal and grass. It’s a place where fans came together.
