Gazing up at the Chiesa di San Gerolamo / Cerkev Svetega Hieronima, one can almost hear whispers of centuries past. The Chiesa di San Gerolamo / Cerkev Svetega Hieronima, nestled in the charming village of Contovello overlooking Trieste, isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to time, a blend of architectural styles, and a keeper of captivating stories. Built in 1606, this sacred space was consecrated in 1634 by Bishop Pompeo Coronini. Originally a modest structure, the growing community necessitated an expansion in 1829, resulting in the single-nave church we see today, complete with a deep apse that transitions from a semicircle inside to a pentagon outside. The Chiesa di San Gerolamo / Cerkev Svetega Hieronima’s façade is deceptively simple. A classic gable roof tops the structure, while two niches flank a central oculus, adding a touch of understated elegance. Inside the niches are statues of two revered Slavic clergymen. They are Anton Martin Slomšek, bishop of Maribor, and Friderik Baraga, a pioneering missionary bishop in the United States. The church’s interior holds a treasure. The main altar, a masterpiece of polychrome stone and marble, was salvaged from the Conventual Friars’ church in Grignano. This church was suppressed under Emperor Joseph II. The altar found a new home in the Chiesa di San Gerolamo, adding a layer of history to the already rich tapestry of the church. Light streams through four stained-glass windows, installed in 1912. These windows depict the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Sacred Heart, St. Jerome, and St. Louis. Outside, the sturdy, somewhat squat bell tower stands as a defiant sentinel against the fierce Bora winds. The largest bell dates back to 1928, while the medium and small bells were cast later in 1951. Contovello wasn’t always a parish. It first gained autonomy as a curacy in 1847. Then, in 1892, it finally achieved parish status, solidifying Chiesa di San Gerolamo’s role as the spiritual heart of the community.
