Dehnepark spans approximately 50,000 square meters. This makes it a significant part of the Wienerwald. Its old trees and diverse habitats are unique. Dehnepark resides in Rosental. It sits on the eastern slope of Hütteldorf’s Hausberg, the Satzberg. On the opposite side, you’ll find the slopes of the Steinhofgründe.
Originally, Dehnepark served as a landscape garden. It was created for Fürstin Maria Antoine Paar, born Liechtenstein. Friedrich Mayern designed it between 1791 and 1804. The park was initially styled as an English landscape garden. Features like temples, pavilions, and grottos gave Dehnepark a Biedermeier romantic touch. Sadly, most of these elements disappeared during the 19th and 20th centuries. Only the neo-Gothic Ruinenvilla from the late 18th century remains.
The park’s name comes from August Dehne. He was a successful sugar baker. Dehne owned a confectionery on Michaelerplatz. Later, it became Konditorei Demel on Kohlmarkt. He invested his earnings in the large wooded property near Hütteldorf.
Decades later, Willi Forst, a Viennese film director, bought the land. He built a villa there. After World War II, the city of Vienna took interest in the park. It was slowly becoming overgrown. In 1969, Vienna purchased Dehnepark from Forst. By 1973, it opened to the public. Since then, the Forestry Office of the City of Vienna manages Dehnepark.
The Rosenbach stream flows through the valley. Each spring, a toad migration occurs here. The artificial Dehneteich and the large meadow below form the heart of Dehnepark. The Rosenbach’s recent culverting enlarged the meadow. The pond is a vital habitat. It is home to the red-eared slider turtle. The Rosenbach is also ecologically important. It creates swamp-like habitats in some areas, despite being partially built over.
Today, Dehnepark is a popular recreational area. It connects to the Silbersee area and the Steinhofgründe. A notable landmark is the plane tree. It stands in the central meadow. Its crown spans about thirty meters. For the youth of Hütteldorf, Dehnepark is a beloved spot.
One unresolved issue is the Ruinenvilla’s use. In 1999, the Forestry Office considered turning it into a museum or forest school. However, these plans never materialized. Despite a campaign by the Kronen-Zeitung in 2003, no progress was made. A concept for the listed building is lacking.
