Didn’t Maharaja Chet Singh expect a different outcome here at Chet Singh Ghat? This ghat stands as a testament to bravery and defiance. Chet Singh Ghat is one of Varanasi’s most historically significant ghats. It is named after Maharaja Chet Singh. He was a key figure in the late 18th-century resistance against British colonial forces. Indians deeply respect him.

Chet Singh Ghat is also known as Khirki Ghat. This ghat is closely tied to the fierce 1781 battle between Warren Hastings’ troops and Chet Singh’s army. History says Chet Singh lost. The British then seized his fort. Later, King Prabhunarayan Singh regained control of the fort in the late 19th century.

Look at the fort’s red sandstone. Chet Singh built this palace-fort to defend against invaders. Notice how trees and shrubs grow from its sides. The Kashiraj Trust of the Maharaja now preserves Chet Singh Ghat and Fort.

The palace was once Chet Singh’s main home. It features pavilions overlooking the Ganga. Buildings once housed women but were torn down. A Mughal garden once stood here complete with a darbar and water tower. The palace connects intimately with the Ganga. The ghat extends the palace. Monumental gateways mark the entrance. A stairway leads to a terrace. There, a central pavilion offers stunning views of the Ganga. The Maharaja would appear here. Octagonal domed pavilions stand at two corners of the terraced level. Three Shiva temples built in the 18th and 19th centuries sit within the compound.

The ghat is made up of four ghats. They are Chet Singh Ghat itself, Nirvani Ghat, Niranjani Ghat, and Shivala Ghat. Balwant Singh the first Maharaj of Varanasi, fathered Chet Singh out of wedlock. Chet Singh was born in Gwalior. He later became the ruler of Kashi. He paid the Nawab of Awadh to take the throne after his father died. But British Governor Warren Hastings didn’t accept him as the rightful heir. Chet Singh refused to supply troops to the East India Company. This refusal led to a bloody battle at Chet Singh Ghat. Chet Singh lost and spent 30 years in exile. Hastings was court-martialed for attacking the King of Varanasi.

Today a Shiva temple graces Chet Singh Ghat. Its continuous fragrance of incense sticks fills the air. Earthen oil lamps glow. The aroma of flowers mixes with chants of shlokas, hymns, and bhajans. Varanasi’s Budhawa Mangal festival is celebrated here for seven days. The riverfront here is not ideal for bathing because of the swift current.

Visiting Chet Singh Ghat offers a journey through time. It provides a deep experience of India’s spiritual and cultural heritage. The stones tell stories connecting visitors to a world of history spirituality, and architecture. As the sun sets over the Ganges, golden hues bathe the ghat. It is a reminder of the past and a promise of the future in this remarkable place.
