“St. Clement’s, Eglinton” you say? Today we explore a cornerstone of the Yonge-Eglinton neighborhood. This is the Anglican Church of St. Clement. Established in 1891, St. Clement’s Church has been a spiritual and community hub for well over a century.

The story of St. Clement’s begins with St. John’s, York Mills. They established this parish to serve the growing community here. The original church building wasn’t this impressive Gothic Revival structure. It was a more modest affair.

But as the congregation grew, so did the need for a larger, more permanent home. In 1925, the current church was erected. The architects Page & Warrington and Charles MacKay Willmot designed it. Their vision resulted in the beautiful building we see today. Its Gothic Revival style is a testament to timeless architectural principles.

Notice the brick exterior. The structure exudes a sense of strength and tradition. In 1938, a parish hall was added. Molesworth & Secord designed it. This addition provided much-needed space for community activities and events.

But St. Clement’s is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place of community. In 1901, Canon Thomas Wesley Powell, then Rector of St. Clement’s, founded St. Clement’s School. Initially, classes were held right here in the parish hall. Later, the school moved to its own building down the street.

Interestingly, the school was originally co-educational. Today, St. Clement’s School is an all-girls institution. It remains affiliated with the church. This enduring connection speaks to the church’s commitment to education and the development of young minds.

Inside St. Clement’s Church, you’ll find a sanctuary designed for both tradition and modernity. The church has been renovated to be accessible. Modern lighting enhances the architectural details. Professional-grade audio-visual equipment allows for live-streaming of services.

St. Clement’s offers various services to cater to diverse preferences. There are relaxed services with modern hymns and classic services. Both feature sermons, prayers, and communion.

The clergy at St. Clement’s Church play a vital role in the community. The current leadership includes The Rev. Canon Andrew P. Federle, The Rev. Liska Stefko, The Rev. Mary M.B.D. Lewis and The Rev. Pamela Rayment. They are dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the parish.

So, as you stand before St. Clement’s Church, remember its rich history. It is a testament to community and faith. From its humble beginnings to its present-day presence, St. Clement’s continues to be a beacon of hope. It welcomes all who seek solace, community, and spiritual growth. This place embodies the enduring spirit of the Anglican Church in the heart of Toronto.
