Carved from Hymettos marble this is Der Kalbträger. He stands before you a testament to ancient artistry. Imagine him in his original home the Acropolis of Athens.

Der Kalbträger or Calf Bearer is an ancient statue. It dates back to the 6th century BC. This imposing figure is not just a sculpture. It is a poignant symbol of devotion. It’s a votive offering to the goddess Pallas Athena. A man named Rhombos son of Palos dedicated it. He sought Athena’s protection.

The statue’s remarkable detail is captivating. The calf rests on his shoulders its head aligned with the man’s. The man wears a knee-length cloak. He has a once-pointed beard now eroded by time. His hair styled like pearls or corals is held by a band. It falls in three braids on either side. His eyes originally separate inserts are lost. The calf’s legs and the man’s muscular forearms form a striking cross.

Traces of blue paint remain on the calf’s coat. The headband also shows signs of color. This reveals a vibrant past. The statue wasn’t just pale marble. It was brilliantly colored. That’s something most visitors don’t know.

Der Kalbträger differs from the Kouroi statues common in the 6th century BC. Kouroi were youthful and nude. Der Kalbträger is clothed and bearded showing a mature figure. This detail emphasizes his role as a devoted worshiper.

This remarkable statue was unearthed in 1864. Its body was found among the Perserschutt ruins on the southeast Acropolis. The base was discovered later in 1887. Today Der Kalbträger resides in the Acropolis Museum in Athens. He is a treasure of Greece’s history.

His story a silent narrative speaks across millennia. It speaks of faith devotion and artistic brilliance. It tells us about a specific person Rhombos and his act of devotion. This simple act of offering a calf to a goddess tells us of daily life in ancient Greece. It helps us to picture the piety and religious importance in ancient Athens. Der Kalbträger is more than just a statue. It is a window to the past. It is a piece of history made real.
