Have you ever heard of a school named after a river? Right here in Tokyo, we stand before Edogawa High School. It takes its name from the Edo River, which flows along the eastern edge of Edogawa Ward. Edogawa High School is one of the many metropolitan high schools operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Board of Education. The school, like the ward it resides in, is steeped in history. Edogawa Ward itself was founded in 1937. It was created by merging seven towns and villages in Minami-Katsushika District. These included the towns of Koiwa and Komatsugawa, and the villages of Kasai, Matsue, Mizue, Shinozaki, and Shikamoto. While I don’t have specific tales from within Edogawa High School’s walls, its location offers a glimpse into the heart of Tokyo. It’s a place where history and modern life intertwine. Edogawa High School isn’t just a school. It’s a testament to Tokyo’s ever-evolving landscape. A symbol of community built from smaller parts. And a reminder of the importance of education in shaping the future, much like the river shapes the land around it.
