The plaque commemorates a dark chapter in history. The building you are standing in front of was once a place of unimaginable cruelty. Erected in 1934 as a modernist villa, the house was known as Willa Jasny Dom. It was a modern and beautiful structure. But in 1945, it became something else entirely. The Red Army had marched into Warsaw, and the villa was taken over by the Soviets. The building became a prison. Willa Jasny Dom was used by the NKVD, the Soviet secret police. In the basements, prisoners were held in horrific conditions. Some were even tortured. The plaque you see here is a stark reminder of the horrors that happened here. The inscription, “W hołdzie patriotom polskim – ofiarom komunistycznego terroru – więzionym w tym budynku przez NKWD, “Smiersz”, “Informację wojskową” w 1945 roku”, tells us the story of those who lost their lives. The plaque is a tribute to the many Polish patriots who were imprisoned and suffered in the building. It serves as a powerful reminder to never forget this dark period in history and to strive to build a better future.
