Gliding gently into view is Pohick Bay. Have you ever imagined a place where history, nature, and recreation blend seamlessly? Pohick Bay is just such a place. It’s a regional park offering a serene escape just outside the bustling Washington D.C. metro area.

Pohick Bay Regional Park is a part of NOVA Parks. This system includes 32 parks. You might have heard of Bull Run Park. Pohick Bay offers a unique slice of Northern Virginia history.

This area has a colorful history dating back before the Revolutionary War. Native Americans lived here long ago. Then came George Mason. Charlottesville had Thomas Jefferson. Mount Vernon has George Washington. Mason Neck Peninsula has the Mason family. George Mason IV signed the Declaration of Independence. His original stone home, Gunston Hall, is just down the road.

During the Civil War, Mason Neck Peninsula became a no-man’s land. Neither Confederate nor Union soldiers felt safe here. Runaway slaves and freed black men were also at risk. The area was close to the border between North and South. Allegiances were often unclear.

The preservation of this peninsula started in the 1960s. It is a remarkable story. There were plans to develop the peninsula. Interstate 95 was supposed to run through it. A grass-roots effort stopped this. It began the initiative to turn most of the peninsula into a conservation area.

Pohick Bay is a large natural area. It sits on the Mason Neck Peninsula. Pohick Bay borders the park on the north. The Potomac River is to the east. Belmont Bay lies to the south.

The park offers a public boat launch. There is a good-sized parking area. You can rent kayaks and canoes. Picnic shelters are also available.

A Frisbee golf course starts in an open area. It winds through a wooded section. Maintained swings and play areas are here for youngsters. Well-marked hiking trails await you too.

Pirates Cove Waterpark is inside the park. It looks like fun for families. Check their website for more information and fees.

Outside the park is a public golf course. It’s part of the Pohick Bay group.

Cyclists can take a short connector trail from the park. This leads to the Mason Neck State Park bike trail. It’s a nice 10-mile ride.

Mason Neck State Park has a paved biking trail through the forest. At the end, enjoy a great view of Belmont Bay.

Old Colchester Road is a Virginia Scenic Byway. Generals George Washington and Rochambeau used this historic route. They were on their way to the Battle of Yorktown.

Nearby, many bike trails await. These include the Washington and Old Dominion Trail, also known as “The WOD”. The WOD is part of the East Coast Greenway. The Mount Vernon Trail starts near Mount Vernon. It runs along the Potomac River.

Pohick Bay Regional Park also features a pleasant campground. It calls itself a family campground. Two-night minimum stays encourage a family environment.

The campground sits 90 feet above sea level. From campsites, you can see Pohick Bay in the distance. The steep slope down to the water is beautiful.

The campground has been upgraded. There are newer full-service cabins with water and electric. Some washed-out sites have been leveled. They are refreshed with gravel and timber boundaries. Now, some sites have full hook-ups. Plan ahead to reserve those sites.

Many short tent-only sites ring the outside of the loop. There are two bathhouses or comfort stations. Each has a washing machine and dryer. Wood and ice are available for sale.

With all the amenities available here, you will enjoy camping at Pohick Bay Regional Park. You can use it as a base to visit Mount Vernon, Alexandria, or Washington, D.C.

The history is endless in this often-overlooked area. So much to do here.

Pohick Bay offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities. Its story is intertwined with the land’s past. From Native American settlements to Civil War intrigue, and the determined efforts to preserve its natural state. It’s more than just a park.
