“Did František Klokner ever imagine his timber pavilion would evolve into this?” Right here stands the Kloknerův ústav, a landmark of Czech engineering ingenuity. The Klokner Institute, officially the Kloknerův výzkumný a zkušební ústav hmot a konstrukcí stavebních ČVUT, began rather humbly in 1921. Prague, newly invigorated after the First World War, needed to rebuild, and Klokner’s vision was perfectly timed. Initially housed in that simple timber structure on Charles Square, the institute quickly outgrew its beginnings. Klokner, a blacksmith’s son from Karlín, became a driving force in Czech engineering. He even served as Rector of CTU in 1928-1929. The institute moved to its current, much larger location on Šolínova Street in 1933, a testament to its growing importance. The Klokner Institute played a pivotal role in the testing of the Nusle Bridge. Imagine 66 tanks rumbling across the bridge in a static loading test in 1970. That was the Klokner Institute at work, ensuring the bridge could withstand the weight of Prague’s future. They didn’t just use tanks. Trucks laden with gravel and even subway cars filled with cement were also part of the rigorous testing process, often conducted at night to minimize environmental influences. The institute also stepped up during the devastating floods of 2002, providing critical advice on minimizing structural damage to flood-ravaged buildings. From its early days in a wooden pavilion to its modern facilities and ongoing research in areas like structural reliability and material engineering, the Kloknerův ústav continues to shape Prague’s skyline and the world of civil engineering.
