The church embraces diversity. People of various ethnicities races ages and sexual orientations find a home here. Families and singles alike worship together. Members come from all walks of life reflecting the varied socioeconomic makeup of the surrounding neighborhood. It’s not uncommon to see many children participating in church activities. This new life energizes the longer-term members.

This reflects the church’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity. Visitors often comment on the strong sense of community. Caring for one another is a high priority. Stephen Ministry is one example of this care. Trained lay leaders offer support to those facing difficult times.
Worship is central to the church’s life. Many members actively prepare for and participate in the liturgy. The style is described as “high church” but not rigid. Music is incredibly important. A wide range of musical styles is appreciated. The choir is small but talented. The von Beckerath organ is a source of great pride.
Social ministry is also a core value. In 1990 a bequest was used to start Transitional Housing Corporation now Housing Up. This is a major provider of housing services in DC. A food and hygiene pantry was started in 2016. It provides food and essential supplies to families. There’s been a special focus on HIV/AIDS. Efforts like “God’s People Are Tested” and “Lutheran GrACE” brought congregations together. The church is also involved in supporting immigrant communities.
The church continually seeks ways to connect with people. Sunday school and confirmation programs are small but meaningful. Vacation Bible School is lively. Since 2012 Abiding Presence has partnered with a Latino Pentecostal congregation. Another church Berea Seventh Day Adventist uses the space on Saturdays. A major renovation in 2008 updated the building. It improved accessibility lighting and the overall appearance of the first floor.
Abiding Presence has served as an internship site. Many pastors have been trained here. The church values this ministry. It sees value in the fresh perspectives and energy new interns bring. In 2016-17 a congregation-wide visioning process took place. The vision statement is “A faith-rooted community with no walls always learning always serving.” Youth ministry has become a priority. The church seeks to serve the community through music the arts and other initiatives.
