Ever heard of a place that locals cherish so much, they wrote a book about it? That’s Dobeška. This isn’t just any Prague locale. It’s a neighborhood steeped in history and community spirit. We’re standing in front of Dobeška Theatre now. Dobeška is more than just a location. It is a feeling.

Dobeška’s story is deeply connected to Václav Šindelář. He was a prominent builder and architect from Braník. Šindelář significantly shaped Dobeška in the early 20th century. The book, “Šindelářova Dobeška”, celebrates this legacy. It captures the memories of residents both old and new. The book reflects a desire to preserve the area’s historical charm.

The Dobeška construction boom occurred mainly until 1938. In 1914 a building association established Dobeška as a villa quarter. The name “Dobeška” may come from a large oak tree. This tree stood near house number 263 on U Dubu street.

Dobeška wasn’t always the name. Karel Čapek mentioned “Na Dobešce” in a 1931 article. He cited it as an example of a name derived from old farmsteads. There is also the Dobeška forest. It was established in 1917 on the originally bare Branické skály.

Today Dobeška is known for the Dobeška Theatre. It is a cultural hub that offers various activities for all ages. The Sklep Theatre company is very popular here. David Vávra and Jiří Macháček are some of the famous actors.

The book “Šindelářova Dobeška” also touches on a sensitive subject. It criticizes the trend of demolishing old houses to make way for modern buildings. These modern structures can sometimes clash with the area’s historical aesthetic. Authors Ing. Karolína Neuvirtová and PhDr. Pavel Procházka created almost a small work of art with great love.

Karolína Neuvirtová is a native of Dobeška and the great-granddaughter of the builder Šindelář. Pavel Procházka is a publicist and writer.

The local pub U Báby is legendary. The band Tři sestry even sings about it in their songs. It has a cozy atmosphere. The actor Vlastimil Zavřel is a regular.

Dobeška is a testament to community. It is a place where history and culture intertwine. The residents’ dedication to preserving its unique character is admirable. As you explore Dobeška, remember Václav Šindelář. He significantly contributed to this charming district. Also remember the stories and memories captured in “Šindelářova Dobeška”.
