Have you ever heard of Julius Fučík? He was a Czech journalist, writer, and active member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. He was imprisoned and tortured by the Gestapo during World War II. We are standing in front of a statue dedicated to him. The statue was created in 1979 by Miloslav Šonka. It was originally placed in the Vítkovice Fairground in Prague. After the fall of communism, the statue was removed. In 2012, it was reinstalled here at the Olšany Cemetery. Olšany is Prague’s oldest cemetery, and many famous Czechs are buried here. It’s a place where people come to pay their respects but it also serves as a powerful reminder of the country’s history. You can see the inscription on the statue. It reads “Reports Written Under the Noose”. This refers to a book Fučík wrote while he was in prison. He wrote it on tiny pieces of paper, which were smuggled out of the prison. The book, a powerful testament to his courage and belief in the communist cause, became a symbol of resistance and was used extensively by the Communist Party after its victory in 1948. After the fall of communism, it emerged that some parts of the book had been censored. Despite its political origins, the Julius Fučík Statue is an important part of Prague’s history. It reminds us of the struggles people endured during the Nazi occupation and the legacy of communism. Even if you don’t know a lot about Julius Fučík or his book, the statue is a reminder of how important it is to stand up for what you believe in, even when faced with adversity.
