“Zum Gedenken an die ju00fcdische Gemeinde und ihre Synagoge” the inscription on the Ju00fcdische Gedenkstele reads. This unassuming stone monument stands before us a silent witness to a vibrant past. It’s a poignant reminder of the Jewish community that thrived in Stralsund for centuries.

The Ju00fcdische Gedenkstele wasn’t always here in the courtyard of the Johanniskloster. Originally it stood on Apollonienmarkt. This was the site of the synagogue where the Jewish community gathered from 1787 to 1938. Sadly its peaceful presence was repeatedly marred by vandalism. The Stele was defaced time and again.

In 1991 authorities moved it for protection to the Stralsund Tierpark. A temporary solution. Eventually the Stele found its current location in 1992. The Johanniskloster’s quiet courtyard offered a more fitting resting place. A safe haven from hate.

The story of Stralsund’s Jewish community is one of resilience and tragedy. They faced prejudice from their earliest days in the city. Accusations of poisoning wells and harming children plagued them for centuries. The horrors of the Sternberger Hostienschu00e4nderprozess in 1492 resulted in the brutal execution of 27 Jews. Even after periods of relative tolerance there was never true acceptance.

The Jewish community of Stralsund did rebuild. In 1757 twelve Mu00fcnzjuden arrived establishing a new community. At its peak this community boasted 170 members. Prominent families like Wertheim and Tietz contributed significantly to the city’s economy. Their names resonate even today.

The Kristallnacht in 1938 marked a turning point. The Nazis destroyed the synagogue. They unleashed violence and terror. Five years later the remaining Jews of Stralsund were deported to concentration camps. Their community was extinguished. The Ju00fcdische Gedenkstele is more than just a monument. It serves as a memorial and a warning. A reminder of the atrocities that befell the Jewish people in Stralsund and indeed across the world. It is a quiet plea for remembrance and a promise that such horrors will never be forgotten. Today it stands as a solemn tribute. A symbol of hope in the face of unimaginable suffering. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of those who were lost. A reminder that their stories must be told. That their memory must be kept alive.
