Saint Raphael was sent to France. There he met Nicholas a young student. Nicholas abandoned his worldly life. He joined Saint Raphael. Raphael ordained him as a deacon. The Turks invaded upon their return. Saints Raphael and Nicholas fled to Lesvos. They joined a brotherhood at the Monastery of the Nativity. They lived there for nine years.

Saint Raphael was savagely beaten. His mouth was sawed. His jaw was cut off. Saint Nicholas was tied to a walnut tree. He endured beatings and stabbings. He died of heart failure. He witnessed Raphael’s horrifying death.
