What if I told you that the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Cape Town has roots stretching back to American gold prospectors? It is a story of faith that began unexpectedly. The Seventh-day Adventist Church stands as a testament to a global movement. It seeks to offer freedom, healing, and hope in Jesus Christ.

The story of Adventism in South Africa started in the 1870s. William Hunt, a gold prospector, shared his beliefs. He had become an Adventist after attending evangelistic meetings in California. Hunt traveled to the diamond fields of Kimberley. There he shared literature about his faith.

One recipient was J. H. C. Wilson. He was a local preacher. Wilson and five others accepted SDA beliefs. Another key figure was Pieter Wessels. Wessels became convinced of the Seventh-day Sabbath. He was then excluded from his Dutch Reformed Church. Wessels learned about William Hunt. Hunt gave him a copy of the Review and Herald.

These early believers contacted the General Conference for assistance. In 1887, the first SDA missionaries arrived in Cape Town. They were D. A. Robinson, C. L. Boyd, and their wives, G. Burleigh, and R. S. Anthony. The first SDA church in South Africa was established in Beaconsfield. It had twenty-one charter members.

Robinson stayed to work in Cape Town. Boyd traveled to Kimberley. The first SDA church building was built in Beaconsfield around 1888. The Wessels family played a crucial role. They donated money that enabled the establishment of SDA institutions. These institutions included Claremont Union College and a Sanitarium.

In 1892, there were 130 members in South Africa. The Cape Colony Conference was organized. Asa T. Robinson was its first president. The conference operated from Roeland Street in Cape Town. The South African Sentinel magazine was first published in 1895.

Richard Moko was the first black SDA minister in South Africa. He wrote the first tract in an African language for the church. Daniel Theunissen was the first coloured ordained SDA minister. He helped found the first coloured SDA church in Salt River.

Today, the Seventh-day Adventist Church continues its mission. The Cape Conference coordinates Adventist activities across the Cape provinces. They strive to embody the church as God’s agency for salvation. It is an amazing story that embodies service, vitality, and spirituality. The church reflects God’s love and grace to the world.
