The salty air whispers secrets of a century past. Wylie’s Baths. The name itself conjures images of sun-drenched skin and crashing waves. Right here before you lies a piece of Sydney’s history a living testament to the city’s love affair with the ocean.

Wylie’s Baths isn’t just a swimming pool. It’s a heritage-listed tidal pool. It hosted Australia’s first swimming championships. It was also one of the first mixed-gender swimming baths in the country. Think of that for a moment. In 1907 Henry Alexander Wylie a champion swimmer and builder created this haven. He carved this space from the sandstone cliffs at the southern end of Coogee Beach.

His daughter Mina Wylie a pioneering female Olympian. She and Fanny Durack were Australia’s first female Olympic swimmers. They won gold and silver medals respectively at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Mina’s legacy lives on within these very rocks. Generations of swimmers have followed in her wake. They’ve splashed and tumbled in the very waters she once conquered.

Wylie’s Baths wasn’t always so pristine. Storms battered the baths. They forced temporary closures. Yet the community’s love for this place persisted. In 1978 the baths reopened under Randwick Council. They returned to their original name. A management committee formed. Local swimming clubs played a crucial role in its rebirth.

In 1995 extensive renovations took place. Architects Allen Jack+Cottier masterfully restored the baths. They preserved its historical charm while modernizing its facilities. Their sensitive approach won the NSW Greenway Award for Conservation.

Look closely. You’ll notice the high timber boardwalk a unique feature in Sydney’s ocean pools. The boardwalk clings to the cliff face offering stunning views. It’s a testament to Wylie’s ingenuity and the enduring spirit of this place. This is more than just a place to swim. It’s a place to connect with history to feel the pulse of a city’s passion for the sea. It’s a place where the past and present seamlessly intertwine. Wylie’s Baths. A timeless treasure nestled within the vibrant heart of Coogee.
