The Mosquée de Hautepierre a beacon of faith in Strasbourg stands before you. Its story begins not with bricks and mortar but with the hopes of a community.
In 1989 the Muslims of Hautepierre formed the Association pour la Réforme Sociale de Hautepierre ARSH. They aimed to support their youth. They faced a challenge. Their community lacked a proper place of worship. For decades prayers were held in makeshift spaces. This wasn’t ideal.
In 2008 ARSH embarked on an ambitious project. They would build the Mosquée de Hautepierre a mosque worthy of their faith and their dedication. Architect Pierre Bohrer designed a stunning structure. The foundation stone for the Ar-Rahma Mosque was laid in 2013. Many attended the ceremony including politicians and representatives from other faiths.
Four years later in 2017 the mosque opened. It was another Friday. The faithful finally had a proper place to worship. The Mosquée de Hautepierre covers 2000 square meters. It can accommodate over a thousand worshippers. Two mezzanines each holding 400 people are reserved for women. The ARSH wanted it to be more than a mosque. Classrooms and a restaurant were included. It represents three decades of effort. It is a testament to the community’s perseverance.
The design is unique. It blends Islamic symbolism with modern aesthetics. The minaret and dome classic elements of Islamic architecture have a futuristic touch. The dome’s 18-meter diameter structure is made of glued laminated timber. It’s covered in natural zinc tiles. The façades are made of patterned concrete. The patterns are similar to mashrabiya found in Abbasid architecture. This design helps insulate the mosque while enhancing its appearance.
The Mosquée de Hautepierre is not merely a building. It’s a bridge between communities a place of serenity and welcome for all. It symbolizes the integration of Muslim communities in Europe. As ARSH President Mr Akhmim said during the foundation stone laying “We chose a large mosque in Hautepierre because we believe our present and future are in France.” The Mosquée de Hautepierre stands tall. It is a symbol of faith community and a testament to enduring hope.
